Indian Navy aspires to be “Blue Water” navy in order to materialize this upcoming dream. Indian Navy is undergoing rapid modernization & up-gradation of its weapon and platforms to develop world class capabilities. It views its dominance in Indian ocean very critical not only to secure vast coastline but also to secure maritime routes, protect freedom of navigation, safeguard trade routes, prevent piracy and abductions in sea. On the other hand it also has to prevent Chinese flexing its muscles in the Indian ocean region, recently Chinese navy have docked their submarine in Hambantota port in Srilanka. Chinese are known to be hard task masters.They are aggressively pursuing  its “String of pearl ” policy to encircle India in her backyard. Indian finds it very critical to build her capabilities and capacity in the region to dominate it .The most practical way is build her nay to be a world class “Blue Water” navy .

 

Scorpene Class Submarine Program

Scorpene Class Submarine is one of the many modernization and capacity building programs to build a modern world class navy. Manufacturing of six Scorpene Class Submarine under technology transfer from Naval group of France under a 2005 contract worth $ 3.75 billion .The first in Class INS Kalvari, joined service in December 2017. Meanwhile, the just launched INS Karanj , third in class submarine has to undergo rigorous harbor and sea acceptance trails after which it would be commissioned into service & expected to join service by 2019.

As of February 2018 , second submarine in the class INS Khanderi is undergoing extensive trails, including deep drive trails . The fourth & the fifth submarines are under construction at Mazagon Dock Limited Mumbai, are expected to be assembled by later 2018.

The Scorpene Class Submarines is the Indian Navy`s first modern conventional submarines series in almost two decades since INS Sindhuhastra which was procured from Russia in July 2000. Further,Indian Navy is drawing up plans to install Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) modules on all the Scorpene Submarines when they go for normal refit six years after their induction.
